Getting involved in a local genealogy group is a great way to interact with others that are also doing research. These societies typically have speakers at their meetings where a lot can be learned. Sometimes traveling to a particular area of your ancestors then going to the courthouses, libraries, churches and cemeteries is very useful.
There are several websites that cost money but are often worth the investment, such as Ancestry.com, Footnote.com, and HeritageQuest.com. Other site are free such as the genweb sites, Cindy’s list, the Mormon family search center and the Library of Congress.
It is most important to talk to living relatives and record all the old stories and see if they have Bible records, old pictures or perhaps old journals. Genealogy takes time to build the family tree. You must be careful to document accurately.
